RIVA
My file server and its specifications, design and implementation.
Specifications :
System:
CPU: 2 x Athlon XP1800+ modded to MP1800+ (1.53 gig)
MBoard: Tyan Thunder K7 Server Motherboard
RAM: 1 gig of ECC Hynix Ram 2.5-3-3-7 timings.
Vid: geforce2 Ti with video out.
NET: Realtek 8110 Gigabit Nic + 2 onboard 3com 10/100 Nics.
OS: Windows 2000 Server SP4
Storage:
17 Hard drives in total.
9x 200 gig WD JB
3x 120 gig WD BB
4x 80 gig WD JB/BB
1x 6gig WD Caviar. (OS drive)
In total there is a total unformated capacity of 2480 gigabytes.
Formated that comes to around 2.3 terabytes.
The 6 and 3 80s are on the onboard IDE controller. This controller doesnt
support more then 137gig drives, so its capabilities
are limited. As i increase the drive capacities, i will move the 120s to it,
and remove the 80s.
There are 2 promise TX2 ide controllers, and 2 Silicon Image Sil0680a raid controllers
in IDE mode.
This allows me a total of 20 drives in the machine.
All the drives are formatted and mounted with NTFS. The drives are mounted
into a directory on one of the 80 gig drives. So as far as the OS is concerned
i have only C: and Z: where Z is the host drive.
Power and Case:
Power is provided by a 475 watt NMB server class Psu.
Power is split for all the drives and motherboard from the one psu.
Pictures:

The Hard drive stack. There is only 15 here.
The stack assembled, and you can see my server mboard there with the dual 1800s.

Thermaltake Golf copper HSF's. Nice and quiet and work well.

The assembled server. All 18 drives, there is only 17 atm , i have made space
for another 200 to go in soon.
As you can see the white box is where i distribute power to all the drives.

Detail of the 3 drives on the base. Its a bit iffy, i have just drilled holes
in the case floor to mount them.

Nice and bright view.

The front plate i made out of melamine chipboard. 2 92mm Nidec BetaVs in the
front and 1 on the side help
keep the hard drive stack nice and cool.
