What exactly do i have?
Well at home i have a small networking system.

Network and System Details.

The network is DHCP enabled with \\gateway being the DHCP server. The wireless access point is also routing DHCP so that if anyone new comes into the network, they automatically get assigned an IP from the server. This also makes the network come up much faster. The gateway also runs Proxy+ in just a HTTP and DNS caching arrangement, with win2k ICS allowing for chat clients and ftp clients to work properly. \\gateway also has a ident server running on it to allow me to access irc channels that recquire ident confirmation. For some reason ident doesnt work over ICS. The gateway also has an FTP server for outside access to my files, it also has the printer attatched to it for network print services. Its an old Epson LQ-400 Dot Matrix Printer. The file server has also got a internal modem, soon to be set up to send and recieve faxes, and also as a backup internet if the adsl modem fails. Its quite a busy machine, the guts of my network. It does my anime torrent downloads, mirc DCC transers, and any other direct internet access programs. Being on 24/7 means i can run MIRC on it to idle in the channels that i chat in with my laptop.

The file server has open shares to one folder. Its my global uploads folder with anything i need to be accessible from every machine i put in there. The file server is innaccesable from the internet. All my machines have the same username/password, i know this sounds bad, but it enables me admin access to every machine from every machine, and also allows me to disable the guest accounts on ALL machines. In a way it helps with security. I could in essence have differently named admin level accounts on the win2k machines, and then on each machine have the full list of accounts as admin, but that would take effort. And i forget passwords too easily.

Not in this diagram is \\webserv which is physically located at samford.net and is the server which is serving you this website.

\\server has 8 hard drives, however with the low noise PSU that came with it, it makes LESS NOISE then any other machine only when the drives are shut down though. The hard drives are actively cooled, and are on a 10 minute shutdown timer. \\server is on 24/7 so it had to be quiet and save power. You REALLY have to listen to hear it. Not bad i think.
It runs dual intel nics, in an automatic load balance arrangement. It gives me 200 megabit bandwidth out, and a normal 100 megabit in. Not really useful at home, but at a lan its definately useful, my record is 23 megabytes a second out. Whats good about it is that it can use a normal switch and it doesnt need fancy NICS and hardware.

The gateway machine is the one open to the internet, and this has no open shares at all, has all extra services disabled, and only has tcp/ip bound to the adsl modem connection. It only has a 6 gig hard drive in it and its main purpose in life is to cache http traffic and run as an ICH and DHCP machine. The 2nd 8 port switch is located in the spare room so it allows any of my friends who come over access to my home network.
